We tend to measure growth with big milestones.

Your next big trick.

Your next level.

But the real sign that proves you’re truly growing in your craft?

When your intention shifts from only nailing new tricks to improving your transitions, flow, and style.

Once you have some moves in your arsenal, the real work of perfecting and connecting them begins.

Learning tricks is hard! But we often forget that we need an equal (if not more) amount of skill and training to smoothly transition those moves with strength, flair, and confidence. It’s that ability to flow that takes a routine from good to magical, and it requires a fair amount of endurance, practice, and focus.

It’s in these moments that a dancer’s personal style begins to develop. How creative can you get? How well do you understand the anatomy of this move?

How can you make getting in and out of it look as impressive as the move itself? That all comes with experience and growth as a dancer, which you must work for—just as hard as you work on new tricks.

Here are some things to keep in mind while you work on honing your craft:

1. Think about your hands and feet

While they might not be the focal point of a move or transition, their placement creates a level of detail that polishes and upgrades your movement. Point your toes!!!

2. Brainstorm multiple transitions

Take two moves and list out 5+ ways to connect them. You’ll be surprised what fun combinations you can come up with when you allow your creative side to come through!

3. Be mindful of momentum

It’s our momentum, or lack thereof, that can make or break a transition. Whether you need to push, swing, pull, etc., how well you execute your transition will likely be the key factor in how well you execute your destination move.

4. Don’t stop moving!

A flowy, connected combo or routine is mesmerizing because the dancer doesn’t stop moving. Continuation and intentional connection are so important to the overall vibe and feel. You could use the most impressive tricks in the book, but if they’re choppy, it won’t deliver the same impact. Whether you’re on your apparatus or on the floor, remember to keep moving and only tack on enough back-to-back tricks that you can realistically achieve in a single combo.
