"Can I teach myself pole dancing?"

This is a highly debated topic in the pole community, and while everyone may have their own take, we think it’s important to highlight the realities of in-person instruction vs virtual instruction…or no instruction at all.

While it is technically possible to teach yourself pole dancing skills at home, there are several reasons why we suggest anyone who is looking to begin their pole journey start in a studio with highly-trained in-person instructors. Let’s break it down.

1. Student safety

Studio curriculums are built around student safety, ensuring every student has the background and knowledge needed to confidently attempt new material. When enrolled in an introductory series, students are strategically introduced to movements and tricks that align with their skill level, and work toward building higher-level skills as they continue to achieve. Without this structure, newcomers may attempt tricks they are not yet ready for without proper understanding of movement mechanics, set up, dismount, and more. Proper engagement and training is essential for preventing injury, as is having a trained instructor who understands how to properly spot students who are attempting more difficult moves.

2. Personalized & professional instruction

In-person instruction allows for hands-on guidance and a tailored curriculum based on individualized skill level. With virtual instruction, that level of detail is more difficult to recreate. Without a professional actively watching and correcting movements, bad habits can be formed that are difficult to forget. Plus, a highly-trained instructor who knows your capabilities and limitations ensures that no student attempts things they aren’t ready for. Instructors are able to provide alternatives, variations, and more based on personal progress.

3. Consistency & faster progress

Motivation is a huge factor in consistent progress, and it’s no secret that it’s harder to stay motivated when left to your own devices. With regular and committed class times, it’s easier to schedule practice into your weekly routine—and that consistency allows you to track your progress, stay accountable, and show up for yourself. Progress isn’t linear, no matter where you train, but it is much easier to get from point A to point B with dedicated practice time in a studio designed specifically for your movement.

4. High quality equipment

Many people who begin their pole journey outside of a studio opt for cheaper equipment, which poses a safety hazard. Studios have designed their space around their equipment and invest in the safest, sturdiest materials. Additionally, equipment is monitored, cleaned, and preserved regularly to ensure that professional level of safety is never compromised. Pole dancing is much more fun with peace of mind!

5. Community

One of the most rewarding parts of pole dancing is the vibrant community you build! By regularly attending a studio, you’re surrounded by like-minded people who are on the same journey as you. Classmates lift each other up, provide support and inspiration, and also help keep you accountable! This is an important aspect that students miss out on when they opt out of in-person instruction.

In a perfect world, in-person instruction is always the ideal scenario. However, there are many people who may not have a pole studio within a reasonable distance, or face a financial barrier that makes studio time less frequent.

In these cases, there are studios and instructors who provide virtual classes, but we recommend trying to attend a few in-person sessions to understand your foundational moves, get used to your apparatus, and learn how to fail safely before going virtual.

Hands-on guidance and instruction is a crucial part to understanding the mechanics of your movement, and promotes a level of safety that is difficult to replicate outside of a studio or private instruction setting—especially for beginners without a background in similar movement styles.

Pole dancing is supposed to be EXCITING, EMPOWERING, and PERSONAL—so however you decide to participate, stay safe and have fun!
