So you’ve got a showcase or competition coming up, and you’re putting together a routine… It’s important to remember that building a piece of choreography is not just about nailing fancy tricks and filling up space—it’s about moving with intention and fluidity. And the key to a successful flow, you ask? Never stop moving. Continuous movement can often feel difficult when you’re executing trick after trick—it’s exhausting, it’s strenuous, and while impressive, it isn’t the core of your choreography. Don’t forget about these basic (but beautiful) movements to use as transitions and bases for your routine. When you take your time and don’t rush through them, they can be just as powerful as your more advanced tricks and help you develop a recognizable style that flows throughout your performance. Think gorgeous lines and extra details! 1. Spice Up Your Climb Yup, we said it. A climb doesn’t have to just be…a climb. Using this opportunity to add flair and drama can really spice up your routine, take up time, and build momentum. Consider taking your legs off and making shapes as you climb. Add in headrolls. Descend a bit and climb up again. Add in an airwalk. With the right musicality and attention to detail, your climb can feel magical. 2. Stay In Your Sit We often go to a sit before transitioning into another trick, but next time, try staying there for a while and playing with your shape. Lay out, try a new grip, engage with the audience—don’t just move through it as a set up! This is a great opportunity to rest a bit before your next big move while also continuing your flow and adding a touch of artistry. 3. Don’t Underestimate A Fan Kick As we advance in pole dance, it’s easy to forget about some basic moves like a fan kick. These can be such fun additions to your choreography and can help elevate your flow and transition you into a variety of moves. Try taking your fan kick into a pole sit, a split, or even an unexpected entry into your climb. Musicality is everything here, and they have their place in even the most advanced choreos. 4. Elevate Your Pirouette Pirouettes help you get around the pole with elegance and flow. But it’s easy for these to fall flat. Try lifting a leg, using your bottom arm to push out as you turn, switching directions, using one hand, kicking out while you turn, adding a couple of them in a row…the possibilities are truly endless. As always, you can use your pirouette as an entry into a spin like star, ballerina, and more. It’s easy to leave these moves in the past after progressing to higher-level classes, and it’s important to revisit them as you improve. These moves give you the opportunity to create your own style, add your own details, and truly make a routine yours. So if you’ve picked out your highlight tricks, don’t forget to sprinkle these in and turn your choreo into a fluid work of art.
